Green Business Intern

Description: 

Urban Solutions is looking for a motivated, responsible, and enthusiastic intern
interested in sustainable business. The Green Business Intern position is a
full-time and paid position, starting June 1 and ending August 31, 2008.

This is a project-based internship. The intern's primary responsibilities will be
working on our Green Business Program (80%) and assuming event-planning
responsibilities (20%) for our annual fundraiser. The Green Business Program
provides one-on-one consulting to small and micro businesses on how to implement
environmentally and financially sound practices. The intern will work
collaboratively on this project, conducting site visits and relevant research and
helping to further develop the program. This position will include the promotion of
the new program to local media, local business owners and the general public (via
the website). The intern will also assist with our annual fundraiser, helping to set
the groundwork for the nominations process for the San Francisco Neighborhood
Business Awards (SFNBA), to be held this October 7th.

Green Business Program Responsibilities (80%) Include:
* Conduct site visits, follow-up research and follow-up visits for clients that need more individualized attention on greening their business.
* Plan, market and conduct one Green Business Workshop targeting small business entrepreneurs.
* Maintain and expand Urban Solutions' "Green Your Business" section on our website, allowing us to reach the broadest audience possible with key information on sustainable practices for businesses.
* Identify and refer clients to green vendors, consultants and other resources, helping connect our clients to specialized green service providers as needed.
* Develop content of our quarterly newsletter by writing articles including green tips and features on local green businesses.
* Cultivate relationships with other environmentalist nonprofits and businesses.

2008 San Francisco Neighborhood Awards (SFNBA) Responsibilities (20%) Include:
* Track nominations and handle communications with business and nominators
* Research relevant criteria for new category award, "Best Green Business"
* Assist with marketing and communications of SFNBA event to local organizations, media and general San Francisco public

Required specifications:
* Knowledge of sustainable business practices and strong desire to "green" the local economy
* Marketing and/or public relations experience
* Proficient in conducting research through on-line and off-line resources
* Excellent interpersonal skills and outgoing personality
* Strong organizational, writing and presentation skills
* Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point
* College degree

Desired specifications:
* Current or previous graduate level studies relating to environmental issues and business
* Proficiency in Chinese (Mandarin or Cantonese) or Spanish
