Title: Zero Energy Commercial Buildings Initiative Summary: The ambitious goal of this new ZECBI is to transform the energy use of commercial buildings in the US to routinely achieve carbon-neutral building performance within a generation. More Information: LBNL has a research team of over 200 scientists working on many aspects of building energy performance, with notable successes and market impacts over the last 25 years with new technologies, systems, tools, standards, etc. But the building sector remains responsible for about 40% of energy use and carbon emissions, and over 70% of electricity use.
The ambitious goal of this new ZECBI is to transform the energy use of commercial buildings in the US to routinely achieve carbon-neutral building performance within a generation. To succeed, the program will need to address industry institutional inertia, foster technological innovation in equipment, materials, and controls, develop innovative tools and predictive models to support innovative design, enhance the education of design and engineering professionals, foster technology transfer from labs to industry, develop innovative processes for delivering and operating high performance buildings, identify deployment policies that will ensure widespread adoption of high performance buildings, and develop metrics and a framework to track long term progress toward goals.
There are groups already working on many of these individual issues, but no one has approached the problem in a comprehensive, integrated manner. The role of the ZECBI will be to help unify new and existing projects under one multiyear framework, with a vastly expanded level of effort, and create a roadmap for building innovation, shared by the industry, that is capable of delivering the dramatic emissions reductions necessary to mitigate climate change.
The ZECBI, initiated by LBNL, is now a joint effort with the Alliance to Save Energy, American Institute of Architects, American Society of Heating Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers, U.S. Green Building Council, and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development. Financial support is being sought from a variety of sources.
Opportunities for UCB Students to Participate
The initial ZECBI effort is broad in scope and offers many opportunities for BERC students to participate. Topics include:
• Technology: What technological innovations are required to develop robust, scaleable solution packages for commercial buildings, specific to building type and location
• Financing: Are there innovative approaches to develop and finance zero-energy buildings (e.g. commoditizing life-cycle energy savings)
• Design Process: What changes are required in current architectural/engineering practice and construction? How would these be implemented?
• Operations: How would zero-energy buildings be operated? What are the human behavior considerations, both for users and operators? How do we measure and expose the real performance of buildings?
• Policy: Are current and anticipated future green building policies adequate? How do we track the overall “state of the industry” and progress towards goals?
There is flexibility in how student participation is structured – both formal and informal arrangements can be made depending upon academic program requirements. Interested students and faculty are encouraged to contact us to identify potential areas for collaboration.

Founded in 2006 by Former Vice President Al Gore, the Alliance for Climate Protection is a unique
single-purpose organization committed to igniting public action to help solve the climate crisis. The
international scientific community is in agreement that we have only a short time to act in order for the
next generation to inherit a healthy earth. However, while public awareness is now high, climate
activists should take little comfort – urgency and a sense of solvability remain alarmingly low. Without

negotiation of an effective international treaty will be impossible.
Until people in the U.S. and around the world insist that effective climate policies are an urgent priority,
many governments will continue dragging their feet. To remedy this, the Alliance is launching an
unprecedented large-scale campaign to build overwhelming public support for the most far-reaching
climate policies achievable. Over a short time period, the Alliance will compel hundreds of millions of
people to demand action from their leaders to halt the climate crisis.
Position Summary:
The Director of Corporate Partnerships will be responsible for creating and managing a high-profile
partnership program with a select group of large consumer-facing corporations. The goals of the
program are to increase the Alliance campaign’s leverage and reach and provide leadership for industry
and government policy. The Director will work closely with directors of the Alliance’s other work areas
to integrate the program into our overall effort to create a culture shift on climate change.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
• Create and manage a high-impact program with consumer-facing companies
• Review and manage inquiries from all companies seeking partnerships
• Work closely on marketing and strategy with executives and staff at the highest levels of large corporations
• Interface with the directors of Alliance programs in paid communications, online communications, grassroots and community efforts, fundraising, and policy and solutions development
• Write program and marketing plans
• Work with legal team to develop MOUs and agreements
• Manage public events and activities with corporate partners
• Develop and oversee third-party evaluation of the partners and program
• Assist paid media program in maximizing value with our corporate communications partners
• Report directly to the Alliance CEO and Board of Directors
Required Skills and Abilities:
• 5+ years experience managing and developing corporate partnerships for government, nonprofit, arts, sports, or university programs
• Strong preference for experience working on climate, environment, or social benefit partnerships
• Exceptional written and oral communications skills, as well as strong analytic ability
• Excellent computer skills, including ease with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Ability to plan, organize and handle multiple tasks simultaneously and meet deadlines in a fastpaced environment; excellent attention to detail and follow-through are essential
• Ability to take initiative, think creatively and work collaboratively

Name of job: Coal Program Officer for Energy Foundation Description: Energy Foundation Overview:
Founded in 1991, the Energy Foundation is a grantmaking foundation whose mission is
to assist in a national and global transition to a sustainable energy future by
advancing energy efficiency and renewable energy. The Foundation's work is largely
focused on mitigating global climate change. Its geographic focus is on the United
States and China, the largest and fastest growing energy
markets in the world.
The Energy Foundation believes a sustainable energy future is one in which the
supply and use of energy help promote and maintain high living standards. Key
elements of such a future are: (1) more efficient energy use and a successful
transition from conventional to renewable energy; (2) maintenance of the earth's
ecological systems and the life-supporting services they provide; (3) provision of
energy at reasonable cost; and, (4) equitable distribution of energy services to
different members of the population, both internationally and within nations.
The following overarching strategic premise drives the Energy Foundation to focus
its grantmaking on public policy:
1. New technologies can grow the economy with far less pollution.
2. Policy shapes energy markets, determining which technologies are developed and
ultimately thrive.
3. Intelligent philanthropy can influence energy policy, thus leveraging billions
of dollars of investment in the energy sector and stimulating dramatic reductions
in global warming pollution.
The Foundation is headquartered in San Francisco and also has an office located in
