Daniel McGrath named new BIE Executive Director

Dan McGrath BIE is pleased to announce the appointment of Daniel T. McGrath as the Institute’s new Executive Director.  Dan joins BIE from his previous position at the University of Illinois at Chicago.   The Berkeley Institute of the Environment (BIE) is a campus-wide initiative created to leverage UC Berkeley’s collective resources for multidisciplinary research, teaching, and action to help address the planet’s most critical environmental problems. 

Call for Proposals: BIE Faculty Interdiscipinary Roundtables 2008-2009

Roundtable

BIE announces its second call for proposals for Faculty Interdisciplinary Roundtables. During 2008-2009, BIE will fund up to four roundtables, one in each of BIE’s 3 core research themes, for one academic year.  Conceived of as a mechanism for incubating interdisciplinary research on the environment, the Roundtable award will consist of a mini-grant of up to $20,000 as seed funding to a faculty team wishing to jointly explore a novel environmental research theme that will over time develop into full research proposal. BIE launches personalized carbon footprint calculator

CoolClimate Calculator

Virtually all emissions of climate warming greenhouse gases can ultimately be traced to goods and services consumed by individuals and households. BIE's CoolClimate Calculator is the first carbon footprinting tool to estimate greenhouse gas emissions from all consumer choices, including transportation, household energy, food, goods and services. Users can compare their results to households living in the same city, with similar incomes and household sizes. Simultaneously, BIE has launched a California-specific version with the state of California and partners. Read more.

Focus the Nation turns spotlight on climate change

Focus the Nation Panel UC Berkeley students, staff, faculty, administration and the local community participated in this educational and interactive forum to put the spotlight on institutional, community and individual action on climate change. The UC Berkeley Focus the Nation team invited local, state and federal political leaders and decision-makers to come to campus and participate in a non-partisan, round-table discussion of global warming. Energy and Environmental Innovation

Are you developing new energy technology? Have you created an environmental policy that will help clean up global emissions? Do you have an innovative model for an energy business or non-profit organization? Perhaps you have an idea that will help alleviate hunger and poverty through renewable decentralized sources of energy. We want to help you make it happen.

Create an Environmental Idea Lab

Is your work application oriented? Do you know students in other departments or research groups that you would like to meet with to discuss your work? Would you benefit from having a student-only discussion about your research area? Consider applying for funds to start an Idea Lab, a multidisciplinary collaboration between graduate students on campus working on developing a common application, product, or service.

Campus-wide Enviro Events Calendar

Enviroevents On any given day, numerous activities related to the environment and sustainability occur on or around the UC Berkeley campus. EnviroEvents gathers campus-wide environmental events in a single calendar system. All members of the UC Berkeley community to add their own events. Participating organizitions can even create their own RSS feeds for display on individual websites. Enviroevents is moderated by BIE and the Chancellor's Advisory Committtee on Sustainability in collaboration with the Campus Calendar Network. Explore, participate, and enjoy!
