History of BIE

BIE Mission
The Berkeley Institute of the Environment (BIE) is a campus-wide initiative created to leverage UC Berkeley’s collective resources for multidisciplinary research, teaching, and action to help address the planet’s most critical environmental problems. 
 
The BIE grew out of an initiative by faculty and deans from the following schools and colleges:
 
  • College of Chemistry
  • College of Engineering
  • College of Environmental Design
  • College of Natural Resources
  • Berkeley Law
  • Goldman School of Public Policy
  • Haas School of Business
  • School of Journalism
  • School of Public Health
  • Letters & Sciences: Biological Sciences
  • Letters & Sciences: Physical Sciences
  • Letters & Sciences: Social Sciences
 
In 2005 the University appointed Professors Inez Fung and Daniel Kammen to be Co-Directors of the Institute.
Daniel McGrath was appointed Executive Director in October 2007.
