| BIE Mission |
| The Berkeley Institute of the Environment (BIE) is a campus-wide initiative created to leverage UC Berkeley’s collective resources for multidisciplinary research, teaching, and action to help address the planet’s most critical environmental problems. |

| The BIE grew out of an initiative by faculty and deans from the following schools and colleges: |

- Goldman School of Public Policy
- Haas School of Business
- School of Journalism
- School of Public Health
- Letters & Sciences: Biological Sciences
- Letters & Sciences: Physical Sciences
- Letters & Sciences: Social Sciences

| In 2005 the University appointed Professors Inez Fung and Daniel Kammen to be Co-Directors of the Institute. |

| Daniel McGrath was appointed Executive Director in October 2007. |
