Summary:
A student internship is available in the National Renewable Energy Laboratory's (NREL) Transportation Technologies and Systems Center. NREL is the nation's primary laboratory for research, development, and deployment of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies.

The Data Analysis intern will develop and analyze datasets to support applications development and maintenance for NREL's Alternative Fuels and Advanced Vehicles Data Center (AFDC), an on-line resource for data and information. The internship will be part-time (15-20 hours per week) during the school year, and may continue as a full-time internship during the summer.

Duties:
The data analysis intern will be part of a team that designs, develops, and uses analytical and data management tools related to alternative fuels and advanced vehicles. The intern will assist the team by gathering, analyzing, and extracting data, including technical, programmatic, and geographic datasets. With these datasets, the intern will collect and address the quality of data, work with team members to load data into databases, and produce analyses and reports. The intern will also collect, analyze, and assess the accuracy of geographic data. The intern may work with Geographic Information System (GIS) applications to develop maps and analyses. Finally, the intern may assist team members in testing new and existing applications for quality and accuracy.

Minimum Requirements:
Currently enrolled in a bachelor's or master's degree program in computer science, information science, geography, engineering, systems analysis, or a related discipline. Good research skills for data gathering and analysis, including the use of Excel spreadsheets and other analytical tools. Strong problem-solving skills. An interest in GIS, including analyzing GPS data and validating data collected from public GPS inquiries. Familiarity and comfort using web-based applications. Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills are a must. Ability to work independently and a strong work ethic are also required.

Preferred:
Understanding of GIS applications and the ability to produce high-quality datasets using commercial mapping software. Ability to make user-friendly maps from GIS datasets. Experience doing data analysis and loading data into enterprise database applications such as Oracle or PostGres. Understanding or interest in waymarking. An understanding of open-source software used to create interactive, Web-based tools. Strong initiative to learn new skills.
