The landscape of U.S. and California chemicals policy—unaltered since the 1970s—is now rapidly changing, driven by (1) mounting evidence of the impact of synthetic chemicals and pollutants on human health and the environment, (2) ground-breaking European Union policies, (3) recognition by businesses and consumers of profound gaps in chemical hazard information, and (4) shifting societal priorities which—from climate change to chemical hazards—are increasingly valuing precautionary decision-making in environmental health.  Drs Wilson and Schwarzman will discuss the origins of the current U.S. chemicals policy landscape, review its implications for environmental chemical testing, and propose solutions to address this cornerstone of sustainability.

Megan

Megan R. Schwarzman, MD, MPH is a research scientist with the Program in Green Chemistry and Chemicals Policy at the Center for Occupational and Environmental Health (COEH), School of Public Health, University of California, Berkeley.  Her work focuses on U.S. and European chemicals policy, emerging chemical hazards and the implications for human health and the environment of the production, use and disposal of chemicals and products. She earned her medical degree from the University of Massachusetts and completed her specialty training in Family Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco.

Wilson

Michael P. Wilson, PhD, MPH, is a research scientist with the Program in Green Chemistry and Chemicals Policy at the Center for Occupational and Environmental Health (COEH), School of Public Health, University of California, Berkeley. His work spans research and practice in chemicals policy, exposure assessment, occupational safety and health and sustainable production. Dr. Wilson serves on the State of California’s Green Chemistry Science Advisory Panel and the state’s Biomonitoring Program Scientific Guidance Panel. He earned his doctorate and master’s degrees in environmental health sciences at the University of California, Berkeley.
