Next Scheduled Meeting Date: Friday, Nov. 14, 2008, 12noon to 2pm
Location: Morgan Hall Lounge - Room 114
Sponsored by the Berkeley Institute of the Environment
Key Contact: Daniel T. McGrath, Executive Director, 2-1385
Event Description:
On July 31, 2008, Congress passed the Higher Education Sustainability Act (HESA). HESA amends the Higher Education Act to authorize a new $50 million grant program at the Department of Education that will annually support between 25 and 200 projects at higher education institutions, though the money has not yet been appropriated.
Throughout its colleges and schools, UC Berkeley is a leader in programs and majors that focus on environmental and societal sustainability. UC Berkeley recently inaugurated its first graduate certificate program, The Engineering and Business for Sustainability Certificate program. The
passage of HESA and recent development in sustainability curriculum in major universities across the nation presents an opportunity for UC Berkeley to consider its position in this area.
This second working group meeting of the UC Berkeley Faculty Sustainability Roundtable will continue discussions the possibility of and requirements for the development of a graduate and undergraduate curriculum in sustainability. A light buffet lunch will be provided.
