Water Quality and Management

Berkeley Water Center

Name of Research Center:
Berkeley Water Center
Description:
Effective water management is not purely a scientific problem, a political problem, a technological problem, a computer science problem nor a socioeconomic problem; it is a complex, 21st Century problem that demands collaborative coordination between all of these disciplines. The Berkeley Water Center has been developed to integrate expertise across disciplines in support of a new research mode for water investigations. The plan of the Berkeley Water Center is to: Develop a seamless integration of LBNL and UCB expertise and apply the expertise to water problems; Develop Research Thrust Areas (RTAs) that integrate Berkeley water expertise within those areas, Create collaborative opportunities between Berkeley Water Center and other expert groups and resources; Create strong, mutually beneficial partnerships between Berkeley and other academic, governmental, and private sector institutions. Accelerate development of RTA research results into applications through strategic partnerships; Function as a CITRIS member institution.

Less energy use through better water conservation technology

Title:
Less energy use through better water conservation technology
Summary:
Install new technologies or retrofit current infrastructure for higher levels of water conservation in university restrooms (~75% of campus toilets are non low flow toilet. If retrofitted, they can yield a saving of 100,000 CCF, with 3 metric tons CO2e p

Environmental Indicators

Title:
Environmental Indicators
Summary:
A literature review of environmental inidicator collection at the city level combined with best practice data collection approaches is urgently needed to improve the way cities manage their resources. USI teams in transportation, urban design and water/santiation can provide guidance
More Information:
As the old engineering addage goes, you can't manage what you don't measure. Urban sustainability efforts have been constrained by the ability of cities to cost-effectively monitor the quality of urban environments, in particular in relation to energy, water quality, sanitation, and air pollution. When this information is collected, differences in methods does not allow for comparison between cities for benchmarking. The United Nations and the World Bank have embarked on ambitious efforts to create networks of cities to collect sustainability information. Unfortunately, progress to coordinate the collection of environmental indicators has been hindered by cost, and lack of unified approach.
Description of organization:
The Berkeley Institute of the Environment (BIE), established in 2005, brings together and helps enhance the diverse campus programs and research units with foci in the environment in new and innovative ways.
